Welcome to the website of Mount Chiran

Located at 1905 meters above sea level, in the heart of the Verdon Regional Nature Park, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, the mount Chiran's astronomical observatory & refuge is welcoming hikers and curious ones about the sky, for an unforgettable evening underneath the stars !

Feet on the ground…

Former elevation site created in 1967 by the astronomical observatory of Hautes-Provences and devoted to photometry, the mount Chiran observatory & refuge has an excellent sky quality and a remarkable atmospheric stability.

Today dedicated to the reception of the public, the cupola and the refuge are open from May to September, for a stay of one or more nights, during your hikes, or to contemplate the heavens.

During the day, we will offer you a shelter and something to quench your thirst at a well-deserved stopover !

The orientation table will allow you to locate you in one of the most beautiful 360° panoramas of the Alps !

In front of you, 1/5th of France unfolds !

Mediterranean, Mercantour, Écrins, Dévoluy, Barronies, Mount-Ventoux, Cévennes, Lubéron, Sainte-Victoire, the massifs of Sainte-Baume and of Maures... and even a little incursion in the South-West by a very clear weather, until the massif of Canigou in the Pyrennees !

...head in the stars.

At the end of the night, an astronomy animator will guide you on a "heavenly hike" to reveal its beauty and immensity.

You will be able to take the time to stay for a full night to observe with the 406 mm diameter telescope, open at F/d 4.5 : nebulae, galaxies, globular clusters, Moon and planets...

While waiting to discover for yourself the Chiran, I wish you a good visit of our Internet site.

Musical full Moons still go on at the Chiran !

Since 2019, Mount Chiran's Observatory & Refuge offer you, during moonlit nights, unauspicious to astronomical observation, to enjoy the exceptional setting in music.
Passionate musicians and artists also inspired by the site will transport you to the stars, with instruments other than the telescope !
Jazz, traditional music, acoustic, celtic, blues, electro, classical…
Eclectism of rigor ! Do not hesitate to consult the blog and its news, as well as the Musical full Moons page, to check out for concerts and any musical events to come, according to the moon calendar. We are also posting all of our news on our Facebook and Instagram pages.
I will be happy to provide programming and presentation of upcoming artists at the Chiran.
In the meantime, I wish you a good visit of our website.
